Color Block Sweater

Difficulty level: Intermediate

Free Knitting Pattern

Size: 10/12 (40/42)

Materials: Wool/acrylic yarn 100m/50g - 17 balls (mail yarn). For the color blocks you will need 5 different kinds of yarn 150g/3 balls each.. You can use any type of yarn you wish. I used cotton, cotton with metallic, angora, and 2 colors of some fuzzy yarn. Make sure that the gauge of the color block yarn will match the gauge of the main yarn.
Needles: 3 (3.0 mm) and 9 (5.5 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge: 15 st x 20 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Patterns:

Rib: 2k, 2p

Stocking Stitch
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts

Color Blocks: 12 sts and 14 rows.

Back
Cast on 102 sts (including edge stitches) on 3 (3.0 mm) needles.
Knit rib for 9 cm (3.5"). In the last row add evenly 26 sts.
Continue on 9 (5.5 mm) needles on 128 sts stocking stitch.
Continue for 29 in. (73 cm).
Cast off 22 st in the center of the back and then continue each half separately. To shape neck hole line decrease 3 st once, 2 st once and 1 st once in each odd row.
Continue for 26 rows.
Start knitting color blocks as follows (see drawing 1):
First and last 9 sts on the row knit with yarn 2 for 14 rows.
First and last 9 sts on the row knit with yarn 3, next 12 sts to the center he row knit with yarn 2 for 14 rows.
First and last 9 sts on the row knit with yarn 4, next 12 sts to the center he row knit with yarn 3, the 3rd group of 12 sts knit with yarn 2 for 14 rows.
First and last 9 sts on the row knit with yarn 5, next 12 sts to the center he row knit with yarn 4, the 3rd group of 12 sts knit with yarn 3, the 4th group of 12 sts knit with yarn 2 for 14 rows.
On the 9th row of the last row of blocks start shaping the armholes. For this you need to decrease 21 sts on both sides in 28 rows. To do this decrease 5 sts once, 3 sts 3 times, 2 sts twice and 1 stitch 3 times.
Next row of blocks: First and last blocks were closed for armholes, remaining sts of the second block knit with yarn 5, next 12 sts to the center the row knit with yarn 4, the 3rd group of 12 sts knit with yarn 3 and the 4th group of 12 sts with yarn 2 for 14 rows.
Next row of blocks. First 2 blocks were closed, 3rd block - yarn 5, 4th block yarn 4, 5th block yarn 3 and the central 12 sts yarn 2 for 14 rows.
Next row of blocks. First 2 blocks were closed, 3rd block - yarn 6, 4th block yarn 5, 5th block yarn 4 and the central 12 sts yarn 3 for 14 rows.
Next row of blocks is knitted partially as the middle of the back will be closed for neck hole. First 2 blocks were closed, 3rd block - yarn 2, 4th block yarn 6, 5th block yarn 5 and the central 12 sts yarn 4 for 14 rows.
After 132 rows from the rib start shaping the neck hole. For this close 26 sts in the middle and continue the side parts separately.
Decrease 3 sts 3 times in each odd row.
Cast off remaining sts on both sides.

Front
Front is knitted the same as back, only the neck hole is different.
After 128 rows from the rib start shaping the neck hole. For this close 20 sts in the middle and continue the side parts separately.
Decrease 3 sts once, 2 sts 3 times, 1 st. 3 times in each odd row.
Cast off remaining sts on both sides.

Sleeve:
Cast on 50 sts (including edge stitches) on 3 (3.0 mm) needles.
Knit rib for 48 rows. In the last row add evenly 16 sts.
Continue stocking stitch on 9 (5.5 mm) needles.
Add evenly on both sides 1 st 22 times in 68 rows.
After 42th row from the rib start knitting color blocks (see drawing).
Start shaping sleeve cap on row 69 from the rib. For this decrease 12 sts on both sides evenly in 60 rows.
Cast off.

Finishing:
Join shoulder seams. Crochet the neck band with 3-4 rows of sc.
Join side seams and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves making 2 pleats (see picture below).
